Sam Sloneker – congas, percussion, drum circle facilitation:
Sam’s mother claimed he began his percussion career pounding on pots and pans in her kitchen before he could walk. As a kid, he had violin lessons and played in the orchestra in Jr. High. Later, in High School, he became attracted to the rhythmic pulse of bongos and congas, and by the late fifties, was making his living playing and teaching music in the Los Angeles area. Sam appeared with many fine jazz and Latin groups, including the bands of Joe Loco, Cal Tjader, Bobby Montez, Manny Lopez, Tony Martinez (“Pepino” on The Real McCoys TV series), Eddie Cano, and the famous Cuban composer, Rene Touzet—often performing in Las Vegas and Reno. He recorded with Touzet, Lopez, Nelson Riddle, Buddy Bregman, and others.
Sam later worked in sales and marketing for 3M Company, Xerox Corporation, and Patagonia, and spent a few years as a freelance photographer. He studied transformational therapies, receiving certification as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, and had a private practice employing rebirthing, hypnotherapy, Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), and Thought Field Therapy/ Emotional Freedom Technique (TFT/EFT). He was involved in the creation of the Los Angeles Men’s Center and served as a facilitator at their Sacred Path retreats, where he assisted the center’s founder, Dr. Stephen Johnson, with group processes and rebirthings and led their community drum circles.
Sam moved to the hi-desert in early 1995, and has appeared locally with Eric Neil and the JT Shakers, Purple Mountain Matinee, Mojave Bluez, Eclectica, The Greasewood Band, Jim Kyle, Just Like T.H.A.T., the Rojer Arnold Band, Allison & Bob Garcia, Michael Mucklow, Alice & Albert Williams, Shawn Mafia and the Ten Cent Thrills, Gregory & Peggy Satori, Dennis McDade’s Jazz Quartet, Muddy Sparks and others. He is a co-creator of the popular Ritmo Loco Afro-Cuban Jazz Quintet (www.myspace.com/ritmolocojt), and plays regularly with The Barking Pupfish (www.myspace.com/thebarkingpupfish), There Be Pirates! (www.therebepirates.net & www.myspace.com/therebepirates), Reallyshooo’s Zydeco and Jazz (www.myspace.com/reallyshooomusic), and Alex A and the Desert All Stars Latin Ensemble (www.myspace.com/lxsantana). Sam also leads community drum circles for the Joshua Tree Retreat Center and Hi-Desert Cultural Center in Joshua Tree and is a graduate of the REMO Drum Company’s Health Rhythms Training.
Sam served for 2 ½ years as First Vice President of the Hi-Desert Playhouse Guild in Joshua Tree, and has served on the advisory board of the Desert Music Foundation; he has frequently participated as a judge in local music scholarship competitions. Sam’s lifetime love affair and involvement with music is among those things in his life for which he is most grateful, and he deeply enjoys playing with the many fine musicians in the area.
